We round up the biggest and best automotive awards you should be nominating your dealership for this year

Do you nominate your used car dealership for awards? If not, you could be missing a trick! We appreciate that award submissions can be time-consuming, but trust us, the rewards are totally worth it. Plus, all the awards we’ve listed below are FREE to enter, so you’ve got nothing to lose! 

In this article all about automotive awards for used car dealers in 2024, we highlight the ones you should be entering, explain why you should be nominating your dealership, and share our top 10 tips for an award-winning entry. Read on to find out more…   

AM Awards

When: Thursday 2nd May 2024 | Where: Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London | Entry deadline: Wednesday 31st January 2024

Organised by AM Online, the AM Awards are your opportunity to be recognised as one of the ‘best of the best’ in automotive retail. The prestigious annual event is always the first in the used car calendar and proves to be a sell-out year after year.  

28 categories are available to enter across independent, franchised, and supplier businesses which will be judged by an exclusive panel of experts independently chaired by industry royalty. From Best in Customer Service to Retailer of the Year, and The Community Hero Award, there are numerous retailer awards to enter.

Motor Trader Independent Dealer Awards

When: Thursday 11th July 2024 | Where: The Eastside Rooms in Birmingham | Entry deadline: Friday 10th May 2024

Bringing together the best dealerships in the independent motor sector, the Motor Trader Independent Dealer Awards is an evening full of recognition and celebration. The annual event is organised by MotorTrader.com and gives dealerships like yours the chance to be crowned the best in independent used car retailing. 

By entering an award, you’ll be able to present your dealership’s achievements to an experienced industry-leading judging panel and even by being shortlisted, it can have a hugely positive impact on your business by association alone.

British Independent Garage of the Year Awards

When: Friday 20th September 2024 | Where: Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham | Entry deadline: Thursday 29th February 2024

If you’re a dealership that offers garage facilities then you may want to consider entering the British Independent Garage of the Year Awards. Known as the BIG Awards, choose from 17 categories that span all aspects of running a successful service and MOT centre. 

From Small Independent Garage of the Year to Best Newcomer and the Customer Service Award, if your team has gone the extra mile, then why not seek the reward they deserve? You know what they say – go big or go home! Enter the 2024 BIG Awards online for your chance to win. 

Motor Trader Industry Awards

When: November 2024 (final date TBC) | Where: Grosvenor House Hotel in London | Entry deadline: TBA

The second set of awards from MotorTrader.com is the much-anticipated Motor Trader Industry Awards. Unlike their Independent Dealer equivalent, the Industry Awards are also open to franchise businesses who feel they’ve got what it takes to win.

Last November, the event played host to 1,000 attendees who had nominated themselves for one of the 34 categories, split between retailers and suppliers. At the time of writing this article, details of the Motor Trader Industry Awards are yet to be announced, so we’ll be sure to update you on where and when the event will take place – watch this space!  

Used Car Awards

When: Monday 25th November 2024 | Where: The Brewery in London | Entry deadline: TBA

Without a doubt one of the most anticipated events in the automotive calendar for many used car dealers, the Used Car Awards are set to return to The Brewery in London on Monday 25th November 2024. The much-loved event is organised by Car Dealer Magazine and hosted by TV’s very own ‘Wheeler Dealer’ Mike Brewer. 

Dubbed the ‘premier night’ of the used car industry, you can choose to enter a number of business-led awards to demonstrate how your dealership sets itself apart from the competition. Award categories aren’t yet open for entries, but we’ll be sure to update you as soon as they are.   

What do the judges look for? 

Before you begin creating an award submission, it’s really important to understand exactly what the judges are looking for in the category (or categories) you wish to enter. What is expected from you and your dealership will be outlined in the criteria against each award category. 

It may be that you’re asked to give examples of how the dealership has excelled in its performance, explain what new initiatives have been implemented within the business, or highlight a certain member of staff who has gone over and above in providing five-star customer care. Whatever fantastic achievements you’ve made, shout about it!

Alongside your text submission, it’s likely that you’ll be asked to provide photos and videos of your dealership too. The more information you can include as part of an award entry, the better – remember that imagery will really help you to stand out from the crowd. You know what they say; a picture speaks a thousand words.

Bear in mind that you may also be asked to submit data to support any of the claims you make in your text submissions, as well as financial information such as pre-tax profits and turnover. But don’t worry, this information will remain confidential among the judges and won’t be disclosed as part of the awards.         

How do you create an award-winning submission?

An award entry should be given careful thought and consideration, and shouldn’t be rushed at all. Don’t be tempted to enter as many awards as you can for the sake of it, but instead, focus on the categories that you feel truly represent where your business sits at that present time.

If you have a marketing person or team in-house, or if you use an agency like ourselves, then utilise their skills. If not, you could put together an initial draft of what you wish to say and then ask a friend or family member to read it over and encourage their input. The more eyes on the submission, the better – you want to make sure it’s been thoroughly proofread and is spot on.

To help, we’ve put together our top 10 tips for creating an award-winning submission:

  1. Identify the best category(ies) for you
  2. List the points that you’d like to communicate in your submission
  3. Answer any questions addressed in the criteria and try not to avoid certain subjects
  4. Include your brand USPs and highlight how you have gone above and beyond
  5. Humanise the information you’re providing by telling a story
  6. Support your claims with data, facts, and figures
  7. Add colour by including photos, videos, and graphics
  8. Stick to the category criteria and try not to go off-topic
  9. Read, read, and read it again! Look out for any spelling mistakes and correct any typos, making sure the entry is straightforward and easy to read
  10. Allow plenty of time to write the entry and upload it online by the deadline date – usually late entries mean NO entry!

Winning an award is so much more than simply owning a trophy. Getting your name in the spotlight can really boost morale among the team and provide the recognition you deserve, as well as building on a fantastic reputation.
